My experience was really good I enjoyed visiting the different schools allowing me to discover which colleges would be best for me. During the week I found a school that I am very interested in which I hope one day to apply to. I was able to notice differences between the schools: Chapman, UC Santa Barbara, Cal Poly SLO, and UC Merced. The UC’s were very similar in appearance however, Santa Barbara felt like it was more specialized for Marine Biology and Merced was more isolated in the sense the school was the only focus. Chapman was different from the UC’s because of its size and curriculum, it felt like it was more of community-based. There was a small student to teacher ratio allowing the more specialized learning, which I personally liked. The school was able to offer a lot of resources for the students such as jobs and internships. Cal Poly SLO was a school more specialized towards math and sciences, which I liked given the career I want to pursue. Their motto is “Learn by doing” being very similar to the High Tech High system with project-based learning. They have an upside down curriculum meaning that once they start attending, during the first two years they begin learning about their major instead of taking the introductory classes at the beginning. Allowing students to get hands-on learning, they also bring various resources to others. Overall, I enjoyed visiting the schools because they were very different curriculum wise. Talking to the tour guides about their experience and their transition from high school I found to be refreshing. The best way for me to prepare for college is to listen to those who have gone through the transition. Some of the schools that I consider applying in the future are a far drive from where I live. It will be difficult in the beginning but I believe it will allow me to focus on my studies. I think that the transition from high school to college allows students to become responsible since they are now expected to take care of themselves and not rely on their parents. From the trip and talking to the tour guides, I was able to learn that a lot of colleges offer various resources for students to meet new people that make you feel like you have a home away from home. I am looking forward to learning and make progress in the career that I want to pursue. One of the schools that we visited on the trip offers an upside down curriculum where they focus on the students major and take classes on that specific major. I am also looking forward to becoming independent which is a skill to have once becoming an adult. Having my own schedule and managing my own time will be really good for me. The only thing that slightly concerns me is the transition from high school to college. We go from depending on our parents to becoming independent and figuring everything out. In college, I hope to Study Abroad because I believe that traveling allows for lasting experiences and memories. It will also allow me to see how different countries approach a task or for what I want to study, medicine. Overall, I believe that this trip allowed to reflect and find the characteristics that I look for in a college. Out of all the campuses that we visited I felt really inspired by Cal Poly SLO and hope to one day attend. This road trip was a great experience for my peers and me.
